2012 Victoria Mile (G1) - comments from runners' connections

Kenichi Fujioka (trainer)
"She was a little clumsy rounding the third, fourth turns. The horse she worked abreast with is a good workout horse. I don't think there's any question her physical condition has improved."

Yusuke Fujioka
"She was very enthusiastic. I just got the impression that the horse was really keen to race. I pushed her today, to a point where she even got a little angry. It's an absolute honor to be able to ride one of the favorites like her. I'm excited."

Katsuhiko Sumii (trainer)
"I thought the workout went very well. For her, the pace of a mile will be the biggest adjustment she'll have to make. She's needed the kind of training to learn how to quicken when the pace slows down. If she can even be a shadow of what Vodka was, I'll be happy."

Hiroshi Kitamura
"The horse had been in good condition, so I was asked to finetune her, see how she felt. She seems like an easy ride, and her response was good. She's not at all in bad shape."

Masayoshi Ebina
"We're talking about a horse who's won five Grade 1 races so I wouldn't expect anything less from her. Regardless, her action today was great, just like it was last week. The workout she had was nothing like she's ever had before. I'm convinced it'll get her up for the big race and hopefully, it'll get her weight down. I think you're seeing a lot of positive signs. The mile is probably the best distance for her. Given what she's accomplished, I think we can hold our heads up high going into the race. I like to think she'll be back to her best."

Sakae Kunieda (trainer)
"We put her through the hardest workout she's ever had. I think she's in the best possible condition she can be in at the moment. [Owner Makoto Kaneko (Holdings Co. Ltd)] has said she will retire after this season so we're hoping she can win another G1 title before calling it a career."

Futoshi Kojima (trainer)
"I just wanted her to have an average workout and I think she looked good. She had a really small appetite at this time last year, but now she can't get enough of her feed. It doesn't matter to us where she is during the trip as long as she settles."

Naosuke Sugai (trainer)
"She was really good today. She's warmed up now after the race she had. The distance, the mile, will work to her favor and she always runs well at Tokyo."

Katsumi Minai (trainer)
"She looked good out there. She didn't lose by much in her last race, and she's confident running left-handed. This race has been our goal all long and we've got her prepared for it. I'm looking forward to it."

Sei Ishizaka (trainer)
"Her time was fast even though she worked out on her own. Now we'll just have to see how she copes with the move out to the racetrack. That's what it comes down to with her."

Fumino Imagine

Kenichi Ikezoe
"I think she's in extremely good condition at the moment. The layout at Tokyo, the mile, they will all be a plus for her."

Masaru Honda (trainer)
"She was ready to go as of last week so she didn't need a heavy workload today. She's improved a lot more than I expected, and you can tell she's starting to become more intense. I'm pleased with the way she's shaped up. She's got that aura, that presence of a veteran horse. I'm praying we can run a clean race because I think we've got a chance here."

Shin Kakizaki (assistant trainer)
"The other horse drove up the pace which is what she needed. It was a good workout. I thought she was in terrific shape for her last race, but I'd say she's close to that this time. She had a little time on the farm since then, and she's refreshed and ready to go."

Kyowa Jeanne

Akihiro Iida (trainer)
"She went all out last week so the workload has been light this week. When she came out of her time off, she was real thin and just didn't look the part. But she's gotten better now – a lot better."

Lady Alba Rosa

Kazuhide Sasada (trainer)
"We wanted to check up on her finishing today. We had the workout we envisioned for her. Last time, we entered her in the Hanshin Himba Stakes at the last minute because she was so full of energy but it turns out she didn't have the work she needed to race. Her condition is a lot better this time around."

Marcellina

Hiroyoshi Matsuda (trainer)
"I wanted to see how she would accelerate. She seemed pretty sharp, and I think everything's gone according to plan. Her build is much better than what it used to be, and the big thing for her is mental; she's mellowed out considerably. Physically, I can guarantee improvement. Now she just needs to go out there this weekend and run her best race."

Meine Isabel

Masami Matsuoka
"I hope to position her somewhere in the middle during the trip, and save her for the straight. There are just two turns in the Tokyo mile which is good for her. And I like the fact we've got a good weather forecast for the weekend."

Takahiro Mizuno (trainer)
"Just breezing today because she worked out hard last week. It's all going well. She's got a big appetite, and things couldn't be better."

Queen's Barn

Keiichi Asami (assistant trainer)
"She had a fast workout on Sunday so she just went through the motions today. Physically, she's been very steady recently which has allowed her to run to the best of her ability. She has no problems running counterclockwise. All she has to do is relax during the trip to run the best race she possibly can at this point in time."

Rainbow Dahlia

Yoshitaka Ninomiya (trainer)
"Her coat looks beautiful at the moment, just shining. It's a good sign for her because it goes to show what kind of shape she's in right now. Her time was pretty fast, and we hope the pace picks up a bit because she's in the condition to stay with it."

Spring Thunder

Hirofumi Shii
"She had a thorough workout a week ago so we kept it nice and easy today. She was the favorite in her last race so I felt like I had to position her toward the front which was a mistake, because the horse got excited and lost control. I won't make that mistake again; she'll stick to the style she knows best."

Whale Capture

Kiyotaka Tanaka (trainer)
"It was a nice workout. She looked strong at the end, and she's definitely on the rise from a conditioning standpoint. She put in a lot of work ahead of her last start but in hindsight, I don't think she was as sharp as she could have been which showed in the race. She was just a little slow to react to everything. She's an easy ride and I'll leave it up to the jockey regarding how she races. I'm convinced we'll have a good race here."
