Selection of Runners

Candidate horses for the race will be assessed on their relative merits by the JRA Selection Committee. The JRA has the sole authority and discretion in determining the selection, and the decision of the JRA shall be final. For invitational races such as Japan Cup and Japan Cup Dirt, the JRA will not only take into account the relative merits of each horse, but will seek to spread continental representation to include the main racing countries of the Americas, Europe, Australasia and Asia. Other essential factors for the selection will be the confirmation of intention to participate and the ability of the horse to meet the schedule of timing necessary for pre-race quarantine. In the event the horses selected by the JRA withdraw, the JRA reserves the right to select as a replacement an overseas reserved horse which can complete the necessary formalities and logistics in time to participate in the race. Should you wish to nominate your horse for more than one race, please indicate on the application form which race is your first choice.

Notes regarding preliminary nominations:
  1. For Japan Cup and Japan Cup Dirt, we can only accept preliminary nominations from the horses that have run in races in countries listed in Part I of the International Cataloguing Standards.
  2. For international jump races, we can only accept preliminary nominations from the horses that have run in races listed in Part IV of the International Cataloguing Standards.
