February Stakes (G1) - comments from runners' connections

Takahito Kikuzawa (exercise rider)
"His movement isn't bad, and he worked pretty hard today. He's been struggling to shed off the extra weight, but we hope today's training will do it. If this doesn't do it, I don't know what will. The distance and the course suit him, so all we want now is a fast pace."

Tetsuzo Sato
"We took the inside part of the track today so his time was around two seconds faster than usual. He felt very good. It's not that he's any more talented than he was last year; the difference is, he's strong enough now to put in the work he needs to put in. I was a little worried he might have trouble focusing (in the Japan Cup Dirt), but he was fine. You want a competitive horse like him fired up for such a big race, and he was. This race starts out on grass, which is a slight concern for him since he doesn't break particularly well. But we're not going to sit back and view the race from behind; regardless of the pace, we'll push him."

Akio Adachi (trainer)
"This was our last fast work so I left everything up to the jockey. He ran at a really good rhythm and tomorrow, he'll just breeze out there. He's much stronger (compared to the February Stakes last year), and he knows how to race now. He can act like a kid away from the track, but he knows now how to switch it on and off. It's hard to say how the turf horses will do, but I'd prefer a barrier toward the outside. Last time, he was around 502 kilograms on race day, and that's probably about what he'll weigh this time."

Yoshito Yahagi (trainer)
"The biggest thing is, he can do all the work that we ask him to do now. His conditioning has been on the up since his last race, and the extra furlong is a definite plus; the mile is his best distance. He had a great workout with a partner today."

Keiai Tenjin

Toshiaki Shirai (trainer)
"His work was outstanding, just like I expected. We saved him for the race a little bit, so if we wanted a faster time, we could have definitely gotten it. But the field is tough this time; he's won twice at Tokyo, but that's not saying anything against the horses we're up against."

Laurel Guerreiro

Mitsugu Kon (trainer)
"We didn't what a fast time from him today, but it's what we got. He worked much faster than we expected last week, so we really didn't need it today. Hopefully, he can make the most of his speed in the race. He was the top sprinter in the country last year, and we can't let him embarrass himself out there."

Christophe Lemaire
"I think he's in very good condition because his action was very good today. But his record suggests he is probably better in the sprint races, and the mile is a little long for him. I think a slow pace will give him a better chance."

Oro Meister

Yutaka Yoshida
"He tends to tighten up into a ball when he trains with a partner, but when he works on his own he looks real relaxed. He's been racing a lot recently, but there's no sign of him dropping off. I think the 1,600 meters at Fuchu is ideal for him. Now, we just need the fast pace he likes. He always finishes strong on dirt, and he's easier to ride in races than workouts. I'm really hoping for a good result here."

Yutaka Take
"He was fantastic in training as he always is. Perfect. This will be his first race on dirt, but what I like most about this race is the distance. I think a shorter race than in the past is better for him. He's not losing weight like he used to; even after a couple of runs on the upslope he can keep his weight now. If he can weigh in at around 520 kilograms, it would be ideal. His movement has been great last week, this week. He managed to ride off the pace today, and the 1,600 meters will be so much easier for him. I know he hasn't had the results because of his temperament, but I have more hope than concern given the terms of the race."

Red Spada

Norihiro Yokoyama
"He hasn't had much time in between races, but his condition and his form was still good. He's always been a fantastic training horse, but after winning his last race (the Tokyo Shimbun Hai) I thought, 'I want to ride him in the February Stakes.' It'll be a fast race for sure, so the start on the turf and the fast track should work to his favor. I've always wanted to ride him in a race like this, and now I'm getting my wish. I can't wait to see what he can do at this level."

Success Brocken

Hiroyuki Uchida
"To be perfectly honest, I need another week or two to be at 100 percent, but I'm good enough to ride a little right now. I still feel a little pain when I move around, but how I move the arm is up to the horse, not me. I aggravated it last week during training, so I had to push back my return. Success Brocken is the only mount I've got this week; I suggested to the trainer that he find someone else since I knew I wasn't going to be 100 percent in time for the race. But both trainer and owner insisted that I ride. I'll do the best I can. I'm not going to lie; I have lost strength. But I will do everything I can by Sunday to make up for it."

Hideaki Fujiwara (trainer)
"When he works in 51 seconds, it's usually a good sign from him. He won the Tokyo Daishoten in December, so that made it easy for us to plan for this race. Last year, we wanted him to gain as much as experience as possible against the best horses so we threw him out there for the Kawasaki Kinen (vs winner Kane Hekili). But we already know now what he can do, and he's been prepared solely for this race. Uchida has told us he desperately wants to ride Brocken. We want to help the racing industry in general by running well this year; after all, we beat the likes of Kane Hekili as well as Vermilion last year. We have an obligation to live up to our title as defending champion; the Tokyo mile suits him best. "

Yutaka Fukushima (exercise rider)
"He finished very strong today. He's definitely sharper now, after getting a race under his belt. We really hope for the best from him after his last performance (fourth, Negishi Stakes), which we think is more than acceptable.

Super Hornet

Yoshito Yahagi (trainer)
"He always works hard, but maybe he worked too hard today. It's been a while for him and he had a hard time staying loose during the first half of the workout. His partner didn't run at all, especially on the straight, and he was on his own in the end. We didn't expect that to happen and physically, he's got a few ways to go. I would say he's about 85 percent ready at the moment."

Testa Matta

Akira Murayama (trainer)
"The jockey (Yasunari Iwata) suggested to me yesterday that we work on keeping him behind a horse and then letting him go on the straight. And we were talking about doing it in a time pretty close to the one he had today so all and I'm very happy with the way he responded. And his throat is fine."

Yukihiro Kato (trainer)
"He can still run even at nine years of age. His action was good and I think he likes his new partner (Hiroshi Kitamura). It's almost like he's been reborn. His action is that good."

Wild Wonder

Wild Wonder (8yo, horse)

Takashi Kubota (trainer)
"We're leaving nothing to chance here because this has been our target all long. I don't expect the favorite who'll be in front (Espoir City) to slow down that easily, and while we'll be better than last time (ninth place, Negishi Stakes), we're in a tough field, no question. But I'm counting on him to run his best race. He's had a lot of races recently so we only worked on his finishing today."

Zarema

Zarema (6yo, mare)

Mirco Demuro
"She's very easy to ride and I get the impression she's in very good condition. Nobody knows how she'll run on dirt, but she felt powerful when I was on her, which is a good sign."

Hidetaka Otonashi (trainer)
"She's no better or worse than she has been. We can only guess as to how she'll do on dirt, but she's definitely ready to go and you can't ask for much more than that from any horse."
