Result of the 6th Victoria Mile (G1)
The match-up between 2008 Champion 2-Year-Old filly Buena Vista paired for the first time with Yasunari Iwata, JRA's current leading jockey, versus 2009 Champion 2-Year-Old filly Apapane, with her career-long partner Masayoshi Ebina, in the sixth running of the Victoria Mile resulted in Apapane barely holding off the strong late charge by the defending champion to claim the title with a record time of 1:31.9. Apapane, only the third filly in history to win the filly Triple Crown last year—which Buena Vista was unable to accomplish—became the youngest filly in JRA history to claim five grade-one victories, drawing even with the number of Grade-one victories held by therace favorite.
Breaking smoothly from stall 16, Apapane was reined back in mid-division, well behind the pacemaker Oken Sakura who set a high pace with some six-length gap from A Shin Returns and Lady Alba Rosa who traveled in second and third positions, respectively. Race favorite Buena Vista settled in the rear group, around fourth from last, and traveled wide right behind the King Kamehameha bay.

With Oken Sakura still maintaining a three-length lead entering the homestretch, third pick Lady Alba Rosa was the first to break away from the pack, nailing the front after the 400-meter pole. Longshot Grand Prix Angel partnered with Craig Williams, who had raced in mid pack by the rail, followed suit. Also surging out from the outside, Apapane dueled strongly with Lady Alba Rosa, took the front 50 meters out, and headed straight for the goal. All the while, Special Week mare Buena Vistaunleashed a powerful charge from further out, steadily closed in on the front runners with her usual late spurt, overtook Lady Alba Rosa in the last few strides and crossed the wire a neck in front. She was, however, a neck short from the winner. Grand Prix Angel who had tenaciously pursued Lady Alba Rosa, crossed the wire another 1-1/2 lengths behind in fourth.

* Victoria Mile (G1)
In accordance with the restructuring of JRA racing program for fillies/mares executed in the 2006 season, the Victoria Mile was established to give the older fillies/mares a stage to prove their ability among their own sex, in addition to the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup (G1), which had been the only G1 reserved for older fillies/mares. While the Queen Elizabeth is run over 2,200 meters and held in mid-November, the Victoria Mile is held in spring and provides female milers a chance to claim a G1 title without having a tough competition in a mixed field.
The race, however, attracts not only fillies/mares suited to the mile distance but also outstanding runners from the middle-long distance group. Dance in the Mood (JPN, by Sunday Silence), the winner of 2004 Oka Sho (Japanese 1000 Guineas) and the runner-up of 2004 American Oaks (G1, 2,000m), won the first running of the race, covering the mile in 1:34.0, while two-time Horse of the Year and multiple G1 winner Vodka (JPN, by Tanino Gimlet) claimed the title in 2009 by an overwhelming 7-length margin and set a race record of 1:32.4.
Buena Vista (JPN) tied the record in the following year while besting the older male rivals in her victory in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) (G1, 2,000m) and claiming two second-place finishes in the Japan Cup (G1, 2,400m) and the Arima Kinen (G1, 2,500m), leading to her Horse of the Year Award of the 2010 season.
The 2010 Victoria Mile victress returned this year from her second overseas endeavor to Dubai in March to meet up with another powerful filly, Apapane (JPN), who is credited with her champion two-year-old title in 2009 and victories in all three of the fillies’ version of the triple crown G1 series during 2010— becoming only the third triple crown filly in JRA history. The King Kamehameha filly had come off a fourth-place finish in her seasonal debut in the Milers Cup (G2, 1,600m) which was her first challenge against a mixed field of proven grade-race runners.
While much of the attention was focused on the match up between the two champions, the race included a string of quality grade-race winners of the four-year-old generation such as Lady Alba Rosa (JPN) who had come off a win in the Nakayama Himba Stakes (G3, 1,800m) in April, Shoryu Moon (JPN), winner of the Kyoto Himba Stakes (G3, 1,600m), and 2010 Fairy Stakes (G3, 1,600m) victress Cosmo Nemo Shin (JPN). |
