Training Report of Foreign Entries
Japan Autumn International
The 41st Japan Cup (G1)

November 23, 2021 (Tuesday)

<At JRA Horseracing School (Shiroi, Chiba Pref.)>

Weather: Cloudy
Going: Sloppy

Grand Glory (GB, M5, Bay)

- after exercising in trot ring, cantered right-handed 1,400m (about 40 seconds per furlong), walked 400m, cantered left-handed 1,200m (about 16-20 seconds per furlong), walked 800m on dirt course
(exercised from 6:30 to 6:58)

“She is eating up all of her feed and there are no stiffness in her muscles. The fatigue from the trip is gone. Considering her muscles balance, we cantered her in both directions today. Tomorrow, we plan to give her the hardest training leading up to the Japan Cup. We got an invitation to run in the Japan Cup in September, and we decided to accept it on October 5 (after the Prix de l’Opera). The 2,400 meters might be a bit long for her, but it is within her range. Races over 2,400 meters in France tend to be slow-paced, but I don’t think Japanese races run over long distances will be slow, so it should suit her. I have not seen the turf course at Tokyo Racecourse, so it is difficult to judge, but I get the impression that it might be a bit too hard for this horse. But, if there’s some cushion on the track, it should not be that big of a problem.”

Broome (IRE, H5, Bay)

- after exercising in trot ring, cantered 1,400m (about 15-20 seconds per furlong), walked 800m, cantered 1,400m (about 14-18 seconds per furlong), walked 200m.
(exercised from 7:03 to 7:28)

Japan (GB, H5, Bay)

- after exercising in trot ring, cantered 1,400m (about 15-20 seconds per furlong), walked 800m, cantered 1,400m (about 14-18 seconds per furlong), walked 200m.
(exercised from 7:03 to 7:28)

“Both horses (Broome and Japan) are relaxed and the two grooms looking after them (both ex-steeplechase jockeys) are satisfied with the horses’ conditions. Today’s training also went as planned and we plan to pick up pace on their training from tomorrow. Their hardest training before the Japan Cup is scheduled for Friday morning at Tokyo Racecourse, but the details of their fast work have not been decided yet. The plan to travel for the Japan Cup was in consideration before we traveled to the U.S. for the Breeders’ Cup Turf. The 2,400m distance is ideal for both horses. In regards to the track, ideally, we would like to have them run on good to firm ground with a standard level of cushion.”
