Kowata places third in Prix Longines Future Racing Stars

21-year-old JRA jockey Hatsuya Kowata finished third in his international debut when he took part in the fifth edition of the Prix Longines Future Racing Stars on Sunday, June 19. Held at France's historic Chantilly Racecourse on a G1 day, Kowata rode on It's A Privilege, a 7-year-old gelding, and finished 3 3/4 lengths off of the winner, Fawley, ridden by Ireland's representative Conor McGovern.

The Future Racing Stars is open by invitation to young jockeys under 25 years of age who have won three or more races but not more than 35 races. It gives the young hopefuls an opportunity to savor the excitement of the big time, demonstrate their talent on an international stage and gain valuable experience. The event carried a total purse of 22,000 Euros, with 14 young jockeys from 10 different countries.

"The horse was a bit noisy in the parade ring and was a little bit ill-tempered, but he jumped out of the gate quickly and I was able to take good position, using the inner starting gate to my advantage," Kowata said. "I'm obviously disappointed that I could not win, but I am satisfied that I was able to ride like I had imagined before the race, after getting insight from many people and also actually seeing the racecourse beforehand.

"Everyday from Tuesday, I got an opportunity to ride trackwork for trainer Mr. Satoshi Kobayashi, and working in a different environment from that of Japan, I was very much inspired by what I saw. I thank Mr. Kobayashi, France Galop, Longines and everyone who assisted me in the process for giving me this valuable experience."
