Uphill battle for Yamanin Sympa, Killer Ability in Bahrain International Trophy

Yamanin Sympa and Killer Ability failed to compete for the US$1 million Bahrain International Trophy in Riffa on Friday (November 15).

At the Bahrain Turf Club, 6-year-old Yamanin Sympa and 5-year-old Killer Ability finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the Grade 2 2,000-meter race among a field of 12.

They were the first horses from the JRA to run in the Bahrain International Trophy since former Shuka Sho winner Deirdre in 2020, which turned out to be the final start of her career. Deirdre placed eighth.

Defending champion Spirit Dancer became the race’s first two-time winner on Friday by taking the tape in 2 minutes, 2.284 seconds, a length and a quarter ahead of Lead Artist. The 7-year-old gelding is owned by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Yamanin Sympa, under Taisei Danno who became the first Japanese to ride on Bahrain soil, crossed the line more than nine lengths out of first. The Oisin Murphy-ridden Killer Ability was almost another four lengths back.

The Japanese raiders traveled off the pace, mid-pack, but could not find a higher gear as they turned for home, unable to keep up with the leaders.

Yamanin Sympa is by Deep Impact out of Yamaninpapillonner. Also sired by Deep Impact, Killer Ability whose dam is Killer Graces.
