2016 NHK Mile Cup (G1) - comments from runners' connections

Note: All entrants are 3 years old

Hakodate Nisai Stakes (G3)
Blanc Bonheur
Blanc Bonheur (filly)

Trainer, Kazuya Nakatake
“She’s been moving well and I’m satisfied with her. Since her last race things have been different with her training. I’m hoping that with the transportation she won’t lose too much weight.”

Assistant trainer, Koichi Shirakura
“I’m not saying she can’t handle the mile, but last time she just never ran on at the end. She’s definitely filled out more, and I think the Tokyo track will prove easier for her.”

Saudi Arabia Royal Cup
Brave Smash
Brave Smash (colt)

Trainer, Michihiro Ogasa
“He’s been training well and there have been no problems. He won over 1,600 meters at Tokyo last autumn, and although the opposition will be stronger, I think if the race goes smoothly for him, he has a chance.”

New Zealand Trophy (NHK Mile Cup Trial) (G2)
Dantsu Prius
Dantsu Prius (colt)

Trainer, Kenji Yamauchi
“He’s raced left-handed at the Chukyo and Niigata tracks and it wasn’t a problem for him. We’ve sent him to different places, so the transportation is not a problem for him also. The real thing will be with how he copes with the long straight at Tokyo, and I feel that’s going to be the key.”

Eclat Millenaire (filly)

Trainer, Yutaka Takahashi
“She didn’t run well in the Queen Cup at Tokyo three starts ago, but since then her results have gotten better. She worked last week and I believe that’s all she needs.  Everything was fine and her times were good. I’m satisfied with her.”

Hakusan Rudolf (colt)

Trainer, Masato Nishizono
“There was no change in him last week and his movement was good. It looks like he’ll have no problem racing left-handed and handling the long straight.”

Immortal (colt)

Trainer, Naosuke Sugai
“He narrowly missed out on a big race win at Tokyo, but he’s raced well there and will have the same jockey aboard this time too. He’s been training well and is more relaxed than he was for his last race. If we can keep that condition right up to the race, I’ll be happy. I think he’s capable of running in a Grade 1 and I’m looking forward to it.”

Kaneno Iro (colt)

Trainer, Yoshikatsu Sato
“He’s been running well and closing well in his work. Of course, the opposition’s strong.  I think he can handle the turf alright.”

Niigata Nisai Stakes (G3)
Lord Quest
Lord Quest (colt)

Trainer, Shigeyuki Kojima
“We know he has ability from the way he’s developed. He’s had results over a mile and I believe he can run well over any trip, providing he settles. The jockey knows him well, and it’s important that he just takes a sit in behind the others before picking things up later in the race. I’m relieved that everything’s fine going into the race.”

Assistant trainer, Takanori Abe
“He certainly has the frame of a miler. His two wins over a mile have come at Tokyo and Niigata, and I think it’s a real plus that he’s back to a left-handed track again. Everything’s been satisfactory with him and expectations are high.”

Daily Hai Queen Cup (G3)
Major Emblem
Major Emblem (filly)

Trainer, Yasuhito Tamura
“In her last race, she just burned out, but we’ve seen how she can run over 1,600 meters at Tokyo. She doesn’t have to go off in front like she did that time, but it’s important that she gets to run with her own rhythm. She’s back at the Tokyo mile this time, so it would be good to see her run like she did in the Queen Cup. I want her to do her best and not lose to the colts. She was the champion 2-year-old filly, but I’m not satisfied with just that Grade 1 win. She’s in great shape, and I want her to run how we know she can, and show everyone what she’s capable of.”

Jockey, Christophe Lemaire
“The most important thing is the pace. If it’s a strong pace she relaxes and runs her race. There’s no problem with the home straight at Tokyo, she can run at her own pace. I want to get revenge for her last run. One more time I want to win a Grade 1 with Major Emblem.”

Personnalite (filly)

Trainer, Ikuo Aizawa
“She ran badly in the Queen Cup. She’s a filly by Stay Gold and they can be difficult.  She’s been doing well in training and I think she has ability. It’s a question of her being able to hold things together against the strong opposition over the Tokyo mile.”

Arlington Cup (G3)
Rainbow Line
Rainbow Line (colt)

Trainer, Hidekazu Asami
“Everything’s gone well so far. His gate practice has also been good. I want him to try his best among this field.”

Assistant trainer, Keiichi Asami
“He lost at Tokyo as a 2-year-old with a slow run down the straight. With a bit more flow to the race, I think he can do better than that, and I’m looking forward to his run this time.”

Shadow Approach (colt)

Trainer, Naosuke Sugai
“After being at the training farm, he was supposed to have run in the New Zealand Trophy, but a hoof problem delayed his return. I think he’s able to take things on here. He’s had a third place finish at Tokyo in the Keio Hai Nisai Stakes. He’s grown up and improved, and I think he has a chance here.”

Kokura Nisai Stakes (G3)
Shuji
Shuji (colt)

Trainer, Naosuke Sugai
“It’ll be his first race at Tokyo, and the mile could be a bit long for him, but if we don’t try we won’t know. After his last race, things have gone better, and transportation shouldn’t be a problem, so I hope he can get to the race in the condition he’s now in.”

Sigerunokogirizame (colt)

Assistant trainer, Shinji Hiroi
“Within the last week he’s done light training. He’s very full of himself. I feel reverting to going left-handed again is better.”

Stormy Sea (colt)

Trainer, Makoto Saito
“After losing badly at Niigata last year when his condition was not so good, things have gone better for him. I’m not worried about him going left-handed and I hope he can show us some of the power which we know he possesses.”

Tizona (colt)

Trainer, Kazuo Fujisawa
“As a colt by Daiwa Major, he’s calmer than some. He has good racing sense and generally runs well. He’s been ridden enough and hasn’t had a hard rotation, so his training’s been easy. Of course, this is a Grade 1 and we’ll just have to see how he handles it.”

Chunichi Sports Sho Falcon Stakes (G3)
Tosho Drafter
Tosho Drafter (colt)

Trainer, Koji Kayano
“This time the distance is one furlong longer. He’s never won over a mile, but things have gone well enough – he’s relaxed, and comfortable in the hands of his jockey. I’ve never won a Grade 1 race, even Grade 2 chances don’t come along so much, so it would be great to win here for everyone involved, especially those at the Tosho Farm (training farm). We’re giving it our best shot.”

Jockey, Hironobu Tanabe
“It’s important for him to run smoothly. I’ll be keeping an eye on the other runners to see how the race develops. The horse has come on a lot, runs well, and I want to get a result. Even when short of room, he just needs to be switched to get going with his run. I’d like the ground to be good and I’m looking forward to what he can do here.”

Urban Kid (colt)

Trainer, Makoto Saito
“He’s a horse who’s developing step by step. He’s in good condition and this time over a mile at Tokyo, I’m thinking about our options. The jockey’s positive about him. Even though the horse hasn’t won since his debut, I think he can run a good race here if he finds his rhythm and gets a chance to show what power he has. I’m really looking forward to his run here.”
