The 37th Japan Cup (G1)

November 22, 2017 (Wednesday)

<At Tokyo Racecourse>

Weather: Fine
Going: Standard (dirt course)

Guignol (GER, H5, dark bay or brown)

- cantered 1 lap (dirt course)
(exercised from 8:13 to 8:19, ridden by Michael Cadeddu)

“I kept him at a slow canter.
If the pace is strong in the race, he doesn’t have to set the pace like he usually does. We are more concerned about the huge crowd and noise he will face which is very new to him. We intend to school him as many times as possible.
His training tomorrow will be the same as today. Our trainer will decide about his strong work, if any.”

Iquitos (GER, H5, bay)

-jogged 3/4 lap, cantered 1-1/2 laps (stronger in the straight) (dirt course)
(exercised from 8:12 to 8:27, ridden by Simone Harnischmacher)

“He moved very well this morning as usual and all is going as planned. His form hasn’t changed from last year, but he may have put on some weight. He’s an honest horse who always gives a 100 percent.
Since most of the races back home have only eight or nine horses in the field, he usually sits in the rear and makes a good late charge. But with a larger field here, he will probably race in a more forward position.
Tomorrow, he will do the same kind of work as he did today. If we are to do any strong work, it will be on Friday, but the trainer will make the final decision.”

Boom Time (AUS, H6, bay)

- walked 1/2 lap, cantered 1-1/2 laps (dirt course)
(exercised from 7:34 to 7:48, ridden by Dara O’Meachair)

“He’s as good as I’ve seen him since he won the Caulfield Cup, he’s acting right and everything seems to be fine.
We had our doubts if he would run the two miles in the Melbourne Cup pedigree-wise, but since he won a 2,400m and that it was a big race, we thought he might fare well. 2,400 meters is his best distance.
Tomorrow, he’ll just go slow again like he did today and on Friday, he’ll run about seven furlongs, about 14 seconds to the furlong, not that fast.”

The following horse entered in the 37th Japan Cup was transported from the Horse Racing School quarantine facilities in Shiroi to the international stables at the Tokyo Racecourse today. The departure and arrival time as well as comments taken from the connections upon arrival are as follows:

Idaho (IRE, C4, bay)

Departed quarantine stables at 10:45
Arrived at Tokyo Racecourse at 12:31

“He’s a good traveler and the trip here from the quarantine center was no problem—just like he went for a spin in the lorry. The first few days in Japan, he was just settling in and now he seems fine, he took it all well. He’s very laid back. On race day he’s a bit more excited but that’s normal for him.
He’s done a good canter this morning and yesterday, and he’ll do a strong piece of work tomorrow, maybe on turf.”

(comments taken from assistant trainer Thomas Comerford)
