Suzuka Devious finishes 8th in Caulfield Stakes

Japan-trained Suzuka Devious, an 8-year-old by King Kamehameha, finished 8th in the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes, held at Caulfield Racecourse on Oct. 12, 2019. Cape Of Good Hope, a 3-year-old by Galileo, held on to win the race under jockey Mark Zahra, with 9-year-old Black Heart Bart running a close second and Cape Of Good Hope’s stablemate Harlem finishing in third.

Mitsuru Hashida, trainer for Suzuka Devious, said: “The pace settled down today and, with the short home straight, the jockey brought him out nicely but couldn’t catch the frontrunners. He was coming back from a break and couldn’t quite demonstrate his good late speed at the end. He can be a bit difficult horse, so I asked the jockey to concentrate on bringing out his late speed. We will be aiming for the Mackinnon Stakes from here.”

Michael Dee, on board Suzuka Devious, said: “I think he ran nicely considering it was his first start in Australia. The pace was slow and it became difficult to catch those in front, but he did show good speed in the end. As was instructed, I focused on letting the horse relax during the trip. If the pace picks up in the Mackinnon Stakes, I think he’ll have a chance.”
