Mer de Glace runs sixth in Melbourne Cup
Mer de Glace

Fresh off a win of the Caulfield Cup, Mer de Glace finished sixth in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup on Tuesday at Flemington Racecourse. Vow And Declare, a local 4-year-old gelding, won the 24-horse field over 3,200 meters, with UK-trained Prince Of Arran finishing second.

“The pace was slow and he was boxed in, but he tolerated it well,” trainer Hisashi Shimizu said. “The field was large and he was one of the favorites, so I knew it was not going to be an easy race – just wish the pace would’ve picked up a bit more. He didn’t have much left in the end, but the margin was not much, so considering the track condition and all, I really think he ran his race.”

“After entering the track and all the way up to the gates, he was very relaxed and got a great start,” jockey Damien Lane said. “I got him to settle in an ideal position, but with such slow pace, I had trouble settling him down. He did quicken up in the final stretch, but because he used a bit of energy during the trip, he couldn’t stretch out as much. He had no problems with today’s track or distance – with a little more pace, he would’ve finished much higher.”
