Zac Lloyd Leads World All-Star Jockeys series at the End of Day One

[Day One Summary]

Zac Lloyd accumulated 40 points to stand on top on the first day of this year’s World All-Star Jockeys. After finishing second with third favorite B B Effort in the first leg, the Sydney-based jockey scored a runner-up effort again, riding 12th choice Spark Richard in the second leg.

The 58-year-old Norihiro Yokoyama claimed the second leg with fourth favorite Can’t Wait and followed in second with 32 points. Yutaka Take, 57, won the first leg with race favorite Asu Miru and was ranked third with 31 points.

Team JRA currently leads with a total of 120 points, excelling Team WAS by 16 points. The last two legs of the series will be held tomorrow, Day Two—the third leg will be the 10th race and the fourth leg, the 12th race.

Prior to the series, Indian representative Suraj Narredu registered his first JRA victory in Race 6 with sixth pick Fier Chanter, his second mount in Japan.

“To ride in Japan was a big dream for me. It feels very special to win on my very first day and to do it in front of my family is always a very special moment. It's a very special moment for India as well. I thank the fans for their warm messages on social media and those who are here today waving the Indian flag,” commented Suraj Narredu.

The asterisk indicates a slight lead.

1st: (9) Yutaka Take—forwardly placed 2-wide in 4th up to 3rd corner, disputed lead with three others 400m out and led turning for home, dueled with Zac Lloyd with 200m to go and held off that foe by 1/2 length
2nd: (5) Zac Lloyd—broke well, accelerated from mid-pack after 3rd corner, was blocked briefly but split horses in early stretch, chased Yutaka Take to the line with tied-fastest late drive, 1/2-length short
“She ran a terrific race. She broke well, stayed right behind the front runners and responded well. I nearly thought we could win it. The winner just happened to be better today
3rd: (10) Takeshi Yokoyama—4th from rear, gradually improved position, split horses in stretch with good turn of foot, dug in with tied-third fastest last-three-furlong speed
4th: (11) Damian Lane—positioned around 6th, tracked Yutaka Take along backstretch, angled out for clear path entering homestretch, but lacked final kick to threaten winner while holding well for 4th
“He used good speed to secure a good position and was in good rhythm throughout without giving up until the end. I think the extra ground he had to cover traveling outside was a bit tough for him”
5th: (7) Marie Velon—raced 2nd from last early, struggled to find space at early stretch but showed fine turn of speed in last furlong to overtake rivals for 5th
“He ran a great race. The pace was extremely fast, but he was able keep up easily and put in a good effort to the wire”
6th: (8) Yuga Kawada—tracked leader in 2nd, disputed lead into stretch, unable to keep up with Yutaka Take and Zac Lloyd and left to rally with rivals coming from behind
7th: (13) Suraj Narredu—raced in mid-pack but wide throughout, short of showing much when needed
“The wide draw was tough. The colt traveled in good rhythm but didn’t respond as much as I had hoped. He might be suited to longer distances”
8th: (12) Christophe Lemaire—smooth trip in mid-field between rivals down backstretch, forced to angle out with a wall of horses in front entering stretch but struggled to secure clear path until too late
9th: (2) Norihiro Yokoyama—saved ground in 4th, entered lane behind Zac Lloyd, failed to keep up with eventual runner-up in stretch, outrun to 9th
10th: (4) Mirai Iwata—hugged rails around 11th, showed effort but was checked by rival 100m out
11th: (14) Richard Fourie—advanced to press pace in 2nd from widest draw, weakened in last 200m
“He made a good start and had good speed but lost too much ground after having to take an outside route due to the wide break.”
12th: (6) Kohei Matsuyama—trailed in rear, no factor
13th: (3) Tomohiro Yoshimura—set pace, faded after 200m pole
14th: (1) Rafael Hernandez—saved ground in mid-field, dropped back after 3rd corner
“I was planning to set the pace since we broke from the inner-most stall but the filly didn't have it in her today.”

4th corner (*14,13)(10,7)(8,4)2(9,5,6)(12,11)1

1st: (7) Norihiro Yokoyama—broke well and saved ground while squeezed against rails turning 1st corner, shifted to outside lane 800m out and made headway approaching final turn, steadily closed gap and accelerated impressively after taking command in final strides to hold off fast-closing rival from the outside to a neck victory
2nd: (4) Zac Lloyd—unhurried 3rd from rear, made headway after 1,000m to go, angled out for stretch run, launched fastest late speed to close in on eventual winner
“After some disappointing finishes in his previous runs, he upped his game and gave an amazing performance today. He felt good, ran smoothly from gate to wire and responded well. The winner had the upper hand today, but he ran a remarkable race and I’m very happy.”
3rd: (14) Yuga Kawada—shot forward from outside stall to lead well before 1st corner, sustained lead for most of the 2,000-meter trip before succumbing to 3rd
4th: (13) Damian Lane—up front behind Yuga Kawada and second behind that foe along backstretch, carried on impressively while overtaken by first two finishers from behind
“The pace was fast but he ran in good rhythm. He was used up but gave his all to the wire.”
5th: (10) Christophe Lemaire—raced off the rails around 6th early, advanced to join leaders turning for home and continued willingly to wire
6th: (8) Marie Velon—nicely positioned in around 3rd early, kept up with pace to stay in contention along final stretch while unable to cause serious threat for win
“It was a perfect trip—the mare ran an incredible race. The horses who shifted out responded very strongly but my mare also showed a tenacious drive to the line.”
7th: (9) Richard Fourie—5th from rear, steadily retreated to 2nd from last, saved ground and took inner route into stretch, showed late effort
“He gained good ground at the final stretch but because of the riderless horse in the race we stumbled at the first corner and was unable to get into a good rhythm mid-race.”
8th: (2) Suraj Narredu—tracked leader in 2nd early, gradually dropped position, failed to sustain bid
“We were able to get into a nice spot early but, disturbed by the riderless horse in the backstretch, we lost our rhythm.”
9th: (6) Tomohiro Yoshimura—positioned wide near rear, gradually advanced, showed little at stretch
10th: (1) Yutaka Take—trailed in far rear, made wide bid into lane, never reached contention
11th: (5) Takeshi Yokoyama—broke well, camped in mid-division, dropped back before 3rd corner, failed to respond thereafter
12th: (11) Rafael Hernandez—sat wide around 8th, never fired
“We weren’t affected much by the riderless horse during our trip but my horse failed to respond at the stretch.”
13th: (12) Mirai Iwata—4th from rear, still in rear entering straight, never a factor
Fail to Finish: (3) Kohei Matsuyama—unseated just after break

World All-Star Jockeys

The World All-Star Jockeys commenced in 2015 as a renewed version of the World Super Jockeys Series staged at Sapporo Racecourse in the summer. The annual event, though called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, is popular in Japan and throughout the world and boasts a total of more than 270 top-caliber participants from abroad during its 37-year history.
In this series, points are awarded to each jockey according to their placing in each race, and the total points accumulated from the four races run over the two-day period are calculated at the end of the second day to determine the champion. At the same time, a team competition is carried out where “Team WAS (World All-Star)” comprising overseas jockeys and NAR (National Association of Racing; local public racing) jockeys compete against “Team JRA” jockeys in their bid to attain the most points as a team.
This year’s “Team WAS” included Richard Fourie (South Africa), Rafael Hernandez (Canada), Damian Lane (Australia), Zac Lloyd (Australia), Suraj Narredu (India), Marie Velon (France) and Tomohiro Yoshimura (NAR Hyogo).
“Team JRA” taking on the challenge included Kohei Matsuyama (Western) who was selected for his victory in this year’s Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby), along with Takeshi Yokoyama from the Eastern division and Christophe Lemaire, Mirai Iwata and Yuga Kawada from the Western division as the leaders in their respective jockey rankings (in wins) as of June 21. Yutaka Take (Western) and Norihiro Yokoyama (Eastern) were also selected to join the series based on their outstanding performances.
Last year, Thore Hammer Hansen (GER) collected 73 points by marking two wins, a fourth and a tenth to capture the champion title in his first appearance in this series. Craig Williams (AUS) and Ryusei Sakai(JRA Western) followed in second and third with 66 and 40 points, respectively. Team WAS won the team competition for the first time since it began in 2015.
