Victoria Mile (G1) - Comments from runners' connections
Affranchir (mare, 5)
Tomohito Ozeki, trainer
“There’s no tiredness from her last race, and she’s been training as expected, with her rhythm being important. She should improve for her last run, where she ran a good race over the extended distance. The opposition is stronger this time, but after her recent run, she coped well coming back from a spell, and I’d like to see her run well at this level and get a result.” |

Haruki Sugiyama, trainer
“She’s looking well in her coat and her condition is good. She’s relaxed, but still seems quick. We’ll have to see how she performs at Grade 1 level, but I think the Tokyo course is good for her. I don’t want her to get unsettled in the race, so a slightly wider draw than in the middle would be good. It’s important that she gets to run with a good rhythm.” |

Mitsumasa Nakauchida, trainer
“The going didn’t suit her last time. She seems to be running well in training with her usual strength, and after last week’s work, this week she feels just right. I’m not worried about the distance of a mile, and she should be able to run a good race.”
Yuya Katayama, assistant trainer
“She seems more mature and more relaxed now she’s older. The pace over the mile might be one of the keys for her, and it will depend on how she gets into the flow of the race itself and how she saves things in the run. The way she’s been running in training though, everything seems smooth, and it would be good to see her rediscover her form here.” |

Yasuo Tomomichi, trainer
“She looks good, as well as having a good appetite for a filly. Jockey Yuga Kawada has been riding her in training and getting her to run smoothly. She’ll be running over a mile again this time too, and the long stretch at Tokyo should be to her advantage. She needs a little time to get into top gear. Despite the other strong horses in the race, I’m not worried about things, and I hope she can put her good footwork to use here. I’d hope for good ground on the day.”
Yuga Kawada, jockey
“Her last piece of work was good and there’s no change with her. I haven’t ridden her in a race traveling left-handed, but she’s gotten results at Tokyo, so there should be no problem. Despite the one strong horse in the race, I think my horse can run well, and I look forward to how things go on the day.” |

Yutaka Okumura, trainer
“She’s handled her workload well, training uphill, and there’s improvement with her. It’ll be interesting to see how she can sustain her run in a Grade 1, but she’s had experience running at tracks like Tokyo. Hopefully she won’t get caught up among a number of other horses, and will get to run at her own natural pace.”
Taisei Danno, jockey
“She won a graded race at three, and when I first rode her I thought she had a strong back and was a horse with potential. She’s a horse with speed and stamina. She should be able to jump well from the gate and get into a good rhythm without any problem.” |

Kazuo Fujisawa, trainer
“In her last work, she ran on the woodchip course with jockey Christophe Lemaire. The horse is calm and has done what I expected. Last time the distance and the ground went against her, but she still ran pretty well. She’ll be back at Tokyo and over a mile, where she’s had success.”
Daisuke Tsumagari, assistant trainer
“She came out of her last race well, and is in good condition once more. Obviously her results at Tokyo have been good, and it should be easier racing against other fillies and mares this time.”
Christophe Lemaire, jockey
“She’s trained well, and her footwork is very good. Her breathing also is fine. I think she’s in top condition, and coming back to Tokyo will suit her. Anywhere between 1,200 meters and 1,600 meters she can show her great turn of foot.” |

Koichi Tsunoda, trainer
“She worked solo in her last piece of work, so we took things easy, but she’s in good condition. It depends on what gate she draws and what kind of start she gets, but I don’t think she has to lead. Running in second or third position would be fine for her. Racing over 1,400 meters may be her best, but she has won a graded race over a mile, so I think she’ll be fine, and with the condition she’s in, she should be able to run a good race.” |

Sakae Kunieda, trainer
“She moved well in her final piece of work under jockey Keita Tosaki. The horse looks a lot better now the weather’s warmer. While she has been running over longer distances, she’s well suited to a mile. There are a lot of horses with strong finishes in this race, so one of the keys will be for her to get a good position, from where she can run on well at the end.”
Keita Tosaki, jockey
“She felt good in training this week, and she’s moving well. When I rode her two starts ago in the Aichi Hai, she felt very strong and ran a good race. I didn’t ride her in her last race, but she still got in a good finish, which is expected from her.” |

Maltese Diosa

Takahisa Tezuka, trainer
“It was good for her to have her last race and get back into the groove again. In training she’s been running in a relaxed and balanced way. It’s clear that she has a lot of speed, and even though it’s her first time over the mile at Tokyo, I don’t think she’ll have any trouble handling it. She’s the type that can take up a good position in a race, and despite the strong opposition, I think she can give a good account of herself.”
Hironobu Tanabe, jockey
“The stable staff have done a good job preparing her for this race, and mentally she’s strong. Her last piece of work was on the woodchip course, where I just checked things with her. I have no worries about the draw, as she can get into a position quite naturally, according to how things go from the start.” |

Yasushi Shono, trainer
“She’s worked well uphill, and last week her time was good and her reactions at the finish were also good. She performed well over a mile last time, and she’s had experience at Tokyo. There shouldn’t be any problems with the long transportation to the track. I think she’ll really come on for her last run, so she should put in a strong performance here too.” |

Rambling Alley
Rambling Alley (mare, 5)
Yasuo Tomomichi, trainer
“It’s been the usual pattern with her in training, where she runs solo. Last week she did her hard work, so this week it was easy for her. She took a little time to recover from her last race, but she’s now in good shape and relaxed with it. I think the Tokyo track will be a little easier for her, and she should handle it well. Good ground would also help her chances.” |
|
Red Belle Deesse (mare, 5)
Yuichi Shikato, trainer
“She’s trained well with her two training partners and has absorbed the pressure from them well. She’s moving very nicely, and doesn’t lean to the right as she had a tendency to do before. Despite the strong opponents, I think she’ll be able to run with a lot of power, and it’ll be interesting to see just how she does.” |

Resistencia
Resistencia (filly, 4)
Takeshi Matsushita, trainer
“She’s kept her condition well this spring. The jockey (Yutaka Take) says she is relaxed and moving well. She’s won two races in record time, and can also handle wet ground, but ideally we would want her to run on a dry track. There’s no problem racing left-handed, and she’s had experience at Tokyo. It seems there are a lot of horses this time that will want to go forward, so I want her to get a good start and a forward position. It’s important that she runs with a good rhythm.”
Yutaka Take, jockey
“She has good racing sense and knows the pace she needs. She’s got to the front or raced in second in a lot of her races, so I think something similar over the 1,600 meters at Tokyo would be good. There’s no disadvantage with the draw, and there’s time to sort things out before the first corner. I hope she can put in a good performance, because it feels like she should be able to.” |

Ria Amelia

Mitsumasa Nakauchida, trainer
“She failed racing right-handed last time, but she’s kept her condition and has been working well. This week she posted a good time in training and there’s a good feel to her. It’s true that she hasn’t had the best results, but she has ability and I want her to show that here this time. We’ll think more about things after the draw and how to get her into the flow of the race.”
Yuya Katayama, assistant trainer
“She has plenty of power, despite it making her a little headstrong. She’s run well at Chukyo and Tokyo, where she stays on strongly at the end. I hope she can get back to form here.” |
|
Shigeru Pink Dia
Shigeru Pink Dia (mare, 5)
Kunihiko Watanabe, trainer
“She’s in about the same condition she was in for her last race, and she seems well. We’ve worked on her finish in training. She was sixth in the race last year, and four starts ago in the Fuchu Himba Stakes the ground was soft. Tokyo is good for her being a wider track, and racing to the left is no problem for her. I hope she can improve on last year’s placing.” |
|
Smile Kana
Smile Kana (filly, 4)
Yoshiyasu Takahashi, trainer
“She needs more constant racing, so with just the one run so far this year, it’s probably going to take a bit more time with her. Nevertheless, she’s run at Tokyo, and does have some good power in her, so I’m hoping that as the race approaches she’ll be in good shape for it.”
Daiichi Shibata, jockey
“She trained well last week, so I took it easy with her in this last piece of work. There’s no big change with her, and she’s improving gradually.” |
|
Sound Chiara
Sound Chiara (mare, 6)
Akio Adachi, trainer
“She’s probably best over 1,400 or 1,600 meters, and last year she had some good results, including her second to Almond Eye in this race. It’ll be her second race after a spell this time, and she does improve for her racing. Among the strong lineup here, she should still be able to perform well, especially if she gets into a good rhythm.” |
|
Terzetto
Terzetto (filly, 4)
Shoichiro Wada, trainer
“She’s looked good in training, moving well, and she displays her natural ability. It won’t be easy against the strong horses here, but she handles challenges well, and it will be interesting to see what she can do. She’ll be going into the race in good condition.” |
