Satsuki Sho (Japanese 2000 Guineas) (G1) - Comments from runners' connections

Acrophase

Yutaka Okumura, trainer
“I’ve been hoping there wouldn’t be any change with him since the Spring Stakes, and that’s been the case. I think he can find a good rhythm in races between 1,800 meters and 2,000 meters. He’s had experience transporting over to Nakayama. He’s drawn outside gates in his recent races, but it hasn’t proved to be a problem. Ideally though, if he drew inside, he could run even better, by not losing any ground.”

Yasuo Tomomichi, trainer
“It was a good enough prep race for him last time, and with just a bit more work, I think he can improve more. He’s been moving well, and he’s come on for his last race. The distance of this next race will be the same as his last one, so that shouldn’t present any problems, and I could take encouragement from his last run. It’ll be the last weekend of racing at Nakayama, and I think he has the power to handle the going as it is. With the condition he’s in, he must have a chance.”

Kenji Nonaka, trainer
“Hopefully he’ll keep his condition from now, and we intend to have the jockey ride him in the last week before the race. The horse has been stretching out well at the finish of his work, and he’s a horse to get better from now. We’ll transport him the day before the race, as he’s still quite immature, but things should go smoothly. Another factor will be how he gets on in the full field of 18 runners. I’m interested to see how he can run if things go his way.”

Yuichi Fukunaga, trainer
“He’s been at the stable since his last race, and he seems quite relaxed and mentally sound. He’s better for having had a race. There haven’t been any problems with his racing experience so far. His 3-year-old career has been short so far, so there are still things that are a little unknown, but he seems to know what to do. He usually starts well and has good racing sense. I don’t think there’s a problem with the extended distance of the race this time, and his racing experience to date should help him.”

Takashi Saito, trainer
“We’ve made sure that he’s not too switched on, but he’s been moving well enough and running with a good rhythm in training, and he seems to improve the more we work him. The jockey (Yuga Kawada) is pleased with him. The horse has lost a bit of weight since his last run, but he should put some of it back on and be in good shape just before the race.”

Yuga Kawada, jockey
“I can feel that he’s developed well in this past month. I think he can run well in this race, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes (G1)
Cavallerizzo

Cavallerizzo

Tatsuya Yoshioka, trainer
“It’s important for him to run with a good rhythm, which he has been doing, and his mental state is good too. He’s more muscular now, and if he runs smoothly, he can do well over 2,000 meters.”

Sho Tajima, assistant trainer
“He’s been doing enough in training, racing over a distance, and his posture is good. It’ll be his first time racing over 2,000 meters and taking on a race with four corners, but I think he can get into the flow of the race. He should be fine with the transportation to the track, so I hope he can run a good race.”

Yuki Uehara, trainer
“He’s handled his workload well, and has been running smoothly with a lot of speed, using all his potential. The jockey (Kiwamu Ogino) has also been a factor in bringing out the horse’s boldness, so things have gone well in the time between races. With his racing sense, I hope he’ll run well.”

Keisei Hai (G3)
Green Energy

Green Energy

Yuki Uehara, trainer
“He’s been running with a good rhythm in training, and finishing off his work well. His workload’s been sufficient, and he looks to be in good shape. The jockey (Keita Tosaki) also thinks the horse feels good. The opposition this time suddenly becomes stronger, but he’s shown that he can run well in different situations, whether it’s a maiden or a race like the Keisei Hai, when he won both well, so I think he can respond well enough here too.”

Keita Tosaki, jockey
“There’s a good feel to him and he’s running well. He seems more developed now.”

Large Ensemble

Ryo Takei, trainer
“He’s come on a lot for his training, as he used to be a little weak, changing leads when cornering, but, overall, he’s become better. He’s developing the right way. After plenty of racing at Nakayama, the ground will probably be a bit loose, which will be a plus. Rain would also be an advantage for him. With things being as they are, and as good as I think he is now, I’ll look forward to his performance in the race.”

Lord Filer

Tatsuya Yoshioka, trainer
“He seems to be in good shape, and I’m pleased with him. He showed good racing sense last time, and I think he’ll come on for that run.”

Sho Tajima, assistant trainer
“He worked recently on the uphill, and his time was 54.6 seconds. The jockey (Yutaka Take) feels that the horse is good, and is better than he was for his last race. He generally starts well, which is a good thing, and can run powerfully if he gets to run his own race. He’s raced at Kokura and Niigata, so there’s no problem with the transportation, and he’s the type that can run well at different tracks. Despite the strong opponents, I’m looking forward to his run here.”

Lovcen

Haruki Sugiyama, trainer
“He’s moved well in training, and has been running over a distance. The jockey (Kohei Matsuyama) thinks the horse was a bit too switched on for his last race, but now he’s more relaxed, and there’s a bit more leeway with him. He’s a horse with potential. He has a good race record at Nakayama, so the switch to there is a plus, as well as taking in the four corners of the race. The key will be to get him to run smoothly.”

Kohei Matsuyama, jockey
“He’s been more settled when running in training, and his times have been good enough. I think he’s at another level now. He got a bit agitated in the gate last time, but he’s quite capable of getting a position in a race over 2,000 meters.”

Kenji Nonaka, trainer
“Things have been as expected with him, and with the way he’s moving, he should go to the race in good condition. He moved well in his final piece of work. At the track during the preliminaries, he’s been relaxed, and he’s been racing well, with his run last time better than his run at Nakayama the time before. It’s a big race this time, and despite the gate that he draws, I think he’s capable of running well.”

Peintre Naif

Peintre Naif

Yuya Tsuchida, assistant trainer
“His reactions have been good in training, and he’s put up a good fight when chasing his training partners. He stumbled before his last race, so hopefully things will go smoothly right up to the race this time. I think to show his best, the ground will have to be firm.”

Yu Ota, assistant trainer
“He’s been fighting well and giving it his best in training. He was a little weak previously, but has improved. I just want everything to go smoothly right up to the race.”

Takahisa Tezuka, trainer
“He was coming off a long break for the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes, but his movement now is very different. He seems to have reached another level. I think this time, racing to the right, he’ll have no problem changing leads. His mental condition is good and he shouldn’t have any problem at the gate. We won’t know about the distance until we try, but racing at Nakayama could be a plus. He’s shown what ability he has so far, and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of race he can run this time.”

Akihide Tsumura, jockey
“I’ve ridden him since his debut, and he feels different now from how he was for the Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes. He’s shown improvement with his times. The Nakayama course should be fine for him, as I don’t see a problem with him racing right-handed.”

Yuki Uehara, trainer
“He worked solo recently, stretching out well and changing leads smoothly. Getting him to run with a good flow has been more important than anything else. It feels like he’s maturing more, with the way he’s been moving. He ran a good race last time over the 2,000 meters at Nakayama, and I think he’s improved in the meantime. I want to see him run a good race.”

Kazuyuki Ogata, trainer
“He’s had his usual training pattern, working steadily on the uphill training track. He’s been running with a good rhythm. Just recently he weighed 462kg, and he hasn’t lost so much weight as he did for his last race. He still ran well last time, so I don’t worry about things too much. He won well at Nakayama as a 2-year-old. He’ll have strong opponents in this Grade 1, but I hope things will be just right with him going into the race.”

Takashi Saito, trainer
“He’s been training well, and has been at the stable as we look to the Satsuki Sho with him. He’s relaxed and shows plenty of speed. His work in the final week should get him nicely tuned up, with his reactions becoming sharper. It’ll be the first time for him to race over 2,000 meters, but I think he has the skill to handle it. Last time he ran well over one circuit of the course, so I think he’ll know what to do. I hope he can run a good race.”

Taisei Danno, jockey
“He’s trained with horses either side of him, and things have been as usual. Since I first rode him, I’ve thought he was a horse with ability.”

Kisaragi Sho (G3)
Zoroastro

Keisuke Miyata, trainer
“He’s had a good training workload, working in the middle of two other horses. More than speed, he has stamina, and his hindquarters are better. He’s been changing up a gear at the finish of his work. The jockey (Mirai Iwata) thinks the horse has a lot more to give. His times have been good, and he has a strong heart and lungs. We’ve had some leeway with him. He ran right-handed last time, but the key will be how he runs and handles the four corners at Nakayama this time, as it takes him a little while to get up to speed.”

Mirai Iwata, jockey
“He’s just how I thought he would be, and he’s been working well. The distance of 2,000 meters will be the key, and until we try, we won’t know.”
