Queen Elizabeth II Cup (G1) - Comments from runners' connections
Akai Ito (filly, 4)
Masaaki Shibata, assistant trainer
“The jockey’s worked the horse well this last week. She’s in good shape and is better for having had a recent race. I don’t think there’s so much difference between her and the other horses in this Grade 1. She’ll probably be held up for a run, so it’ll be important for her to find a good rhythm.”
Hideaki Miyuki, jockey
“She seems lively and ready to run. The distance of the race is longer this time, but she races kindly and I think she’ll be able to handle things well.” |

Sakae Kunieda, trainer
“There have been no problems with her since her last race. Her appetite’s been good and she’s filling out more. The jockey knows her well and I have no concerns about anything. We haven’t overdone it with her (bearing in mind the trip to Kansai), and she’s been working nicely with two other horses in training, and fast times haven’t been required. She’s had success at Hanshin, and I’m not worried about the extra distance. She gets a 2kg allowance, so I suppose the key really is how she’ll perform among the older horses. Other 3-year-olds have been successful in the race, and I think she can give a good account of herself.”
Keita Tosaki, jockey
“She’s in good condition, and she’s a horse that knows how to race. She seems bigger, and she’s been eating very well. She seems similar now to the other top 3-year-old fillies the trainer has had a lot of success with. It was a good win for her last time in a Grade 1, and I look forward to taking on the older horses here.” |

Shogo Yasuda, trainer
“Her weight is around 460kg, which seems about right. Since her last race, things have been fine with her. Now the heat of the summer has gone, I wondered how she might be, but she’s sharp and has a good appetite for a female horse. She’s been learning as she progresses, and she’s more relaxed, but still there’s a little unknown about her behavior. I think she’ll run in a balanced way over the 2,200 meters at Hanshin, and hopefully things will go well for her.” |

Yasuo Tomomichi, trainer
“She’s improved in training these past two weeks, and her heart and lungs are strong. We’ve had this race in mind for her since the summer. She should come on for her last race, and it’s important that she gets her good finish in. She’s won a big race at Hanshin, and the distance will be fine for her. Handling the rise in the homestraight shouldn’t be a problem either. She should be capable of a good run in this Grade 1.”
Yutaka Take, jockey
“She’s a talented horse and she must have a chance. I rode her when she won at the beginning of her career, so I think she’s a capable horse. I’ll look forward to this race with her.” |

Tomonori Kanaori, assistant trainer
“She seems to be in good condition, and she’s easier to get ready for a race now than she was before. It’s best if she’s just off the pace and trying to conserve things until late in a race, and in that way, I don’t think distance is an issue. It’ll be her first time over 2,200 meters, but if things go her way, I think she can do well among this opposition.”
Ryuji Wada, jockey
“She doesn’t have any bad habits and moves well. Her reactions are good, but she loses a bit of concentration if she’s in front for too long. She should get into the flow of the race alright.” |

Kotobuki Thetis (filly, 4)
Toshiaki Tajima, trainer
“She’s been at the stable, and there’s little change in her condition, which has also meant she’s been able to maintain her weight at around the 446kg mark. It’ll be her first time in such a strong race, but she’ll be brave in taking it on, I’m sure, and she will hopefully show her strength. I want her to do well in this big race.”
Yoshitomi Shibata, jockey
“The horse is very well and seems in good condition. She seems a bit more serious than she was in the spring, and shows she has power too.” |

Tomokazu Takano, trainer
“She’s a lot easier to ride these days, so I don’t have much to worry about with her. After her last race in the All Comers, she was fine, and her condition is good going into this race. She’s looking more muscular too. I’m pleased that she’s been running well in training. She’s proved that 2,200 meters isn’t a problem, although just seeing it out a bit better could be the key. The jockey’s had some good recent contact with her. Hopefully the weather and going will be good on the day and she’ll be able to get a good result.”
Christophe Lemaire, jockey
“Even last year when I rode her in training, I felt she had potential. She now seems bigger and more mature. Her strong point is that she can run with a good rhythm. The inner course is a bit tricky, like all inner tracks, but it should suit her. It’ll be important to get a good start and get her relaxed, and just take a sit in behind another horse if possible.” |

Hirofumi Shii, trainer
“There hasn’t been long in between races, so we haven’t felt the need to do too much with her. She’ll face tough opposition this time, but I was pleased with her run last time when she showed she could go off in front and run a strong race that way, something that had never happened before. She’ll wear cheekpieces this time too, and I’ll also consider blinkers as well.”
Akatsuki Tomita, jockey
“She seems switched on and in good order. She ran in a positive way last time, and that leads her into this one nicely, where she should do well.” |

Takashi Suzuki, trainer
“She’s better for her last race. I’ve been wanting to try her on the inside track at Hanshin, thinking it would be good for her. She hasn’t won a graded race, but she ran well in last year’s Rose Stakes and this year’s Fukushima Himba Stakes. She goes into a race full of good horses here, but I want her to give it her best shot, and hope she can be a match for the other runners.” |

Yasuo Tomomichi, trainer
“She came back from the farm about a month ago. Her movement’s good and she’s quite relaxed. Everything’s been fine since her last race. While she’s trained with other horses on the training track, she’s just worked by herself in the finish during her workouts. I think the switch to Hanshin this time will be better, even though the distance is the same. It’s a plus that she’ll also race among other female horses only. If she gets to run her own race, I think she can put up a good fight.” |

Hiroyuki Uehara, trainer
“She does things her own way, but since a week or so ago, her condition has improved. She doesn’t need to hold back in a race, and if it means going to the front that’s fine, providing she gets to run at her own pace, which will be the key. We’ll have to see what she can do among the strong opponents here.” |

Shozo Sasaki, trainer
“She’s come on a lot for her recent work. Having won the Mermaid Stakes, I think the inner course at Hanshin suits her. I’d like her to run in about second or third in the race, and hope the pace isn’t too fast. I hope she can put up a good performance in a Grade 1.”
Taisei Danno, jockey
“She did her hard work last week, so this week she’s taken things a bit easy. She’s moved well throughout training and her breathing is just right.” |

Soft Fruit
Soft Fruit (filly, 4)
Takashi Saito, trainer
“She’ll come on for her last run, and in training she shows that to be the case. I’m a little worried about her lack of good results at Hanshin, but she did finish sixth in last year’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup, so I think she should have a part to play once more.”
Mirai Iwata, jockey
“Her responses have improved since a week ago. There should be no problem with the course. I’ll be looking to save her legs throughout the run, as that’s the type of race that will be best for her.” |
|
Stellaria
Stellaria (filly, 3)
Takashi Saito, trainer
“We haven’t overdone things with her, particularly leading into the race. She did her fast work a week ago. The distance of the race shouldn’t be a problem, and it should actually suit her better. I think she’s running better than she was in the spring. More than getting a position in the race, I want to just see her settle well from the start.” |
|

Shoichiro Wada, trainer
“After her last race, we decided to make this her target. She can get a little excited, so it’s important to keep her calm. In training also, it’s necessary to save her and just get her to finish off strongly. Her strong point is her ability to run a good race when things go right for her. She hasn’t run over this trip, but on breeding the distance should be fine. She’ll have to get into the flow of the race, but I think she’s a horse with Grade 1 winning potential.” |

Yoshitada Munakata, trainer
“She ran well in her last race and showed she’s able to get into a good rhythm. There’s a slightly difficult side to her, so this has to be kept in mind. In her last piece of work, she just had an easy solo run, as she has to transport over to Hanshin. She’s the type that doesn’t need to be by herself when being transported. The race distance is good, and it’s almost the longer the better for her. Having run a good race over 2,200 meters at Nakayama last time, I’d like to see her do her best this time too.”
Yuji Tannai, jockey
“She’s had a good enough workload and her breathing is good. She’s been able to respond well when finishing off her run in training, so I’m pleased with her condition. If she can run her own race among this strong field, I think she has a chance, particularly if the pace isn’t too fast.” |

Win Marilyn

Takahisa Tezuka, trainer
“She’s better now than she was as a 3-year-old, and mentally she’s improved too. As this race approaches, we’ve done our best to get her into a good condition, and after her last race and recent training, she’s in good enough shape, I feel. There wasn’t much in it in last year’s race when she finished fourth, so Hanshin seems good for her. She usually starts well and gets a good position in a race. After her run in the All Comers, I think she has a good chance in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup.”
Takeshi Yokoyama, jockey
“Despite the fever she had recently, it feels like she’s in good form overall. She finished fourth in the race last year, so I want to get the best out of her this time to show how she’s developed in this past year. She’s a horse with a lot of guts. Depending on the draw, I’ll see what kind of position we take up in the race.” |
