Centaur Stakes (G2) - Data Analysis

Runners backed as 1st-2nd favorite are highly likely to perform well
Over the last 10 years, runners backed as 1st favorite have produced seven winners, while those backed as 2nd favorite have delivered one winner and five 2nd-place finishers, suggesting that top-favored runners live up to expectations. However, dark horses backed as 6th favorite or lower have finished in the Top 3 in nine of the last 10 races. For example, T M Spada pulled off an upset victory in 2023 as the 14th favorite, resulting in a substantial Trifecta payout of 978,840 yen. While the runners backed as 1st-2nd favorite are undeniably the leading contenders, it may be wise to cast a wider net when considering other runners. [Table 1]

No significant difference in Top 3 ratio among runners aged 3 to 5
Looking at performances by age over the last 10 years, we find that 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds split the victories equally, with five wins each. In terms of Top 3 ratio, 3-year-olds did not lag behind either, while horses aged 5 or below were neck and neck. We should therefore focus on runners aged 5 or below. [Table 2]

Strong performance by runners coming from both domestic and overseas G1 and G2 races
Looking at performances by runners over the last 10 years in terms of the previous race, we note that runners coming from G2 races have achieved a high Top 3 ratio of 71.4%, suggesting a strong probability of a Top 3 finish. Notably, all runners in this group came from the Keio Hai Spring Cup, with three of them going on to win the Sankei Sho Centaur Stakes since 2022—a clear sign of the strong recent trend. Meanwhile, runners coming from G1 races similarly produced three winners and recorded a Top 3 ratio of 40.0%. While the group coming from overseas G1 races consisted of only two runners, both finished in the Top 2. Therefore, we should give priority to runners coming from high-grade races. [Table 3]

Winners of a previous graded race dominate
Among the last 10 winners, nine had experience of winning a JRA graded race. This includes the aforementioned T M Spada and last year’s winner Kangchenjunga (backed as 8th favorite). Given this trend, we should not underestimate graded race winners regardless of their popularity. [Table 4]
