Sprinters Stakes (G1) - Data Analysis
Favorites lead the way, but longshots can surprise
Looking at performances by runners over the last 10 years in terms of favoritism, we find that runners backed as 1st-3rd favorite achieved more or less similar Top 3 ratios of 40-50%. Since runners backed as 3rd favorite or higher have collectively finished outside the Top 3 only twice, in 2022 and 2024, the best strategy for combination bets is to build your ticket around a runner backed as 3rd favorite or higher. However, there have also been plenty of upsets in recent years, with runners such as Win Carnelian (11th favorite, 2025), Lugal (9th favorite, 2024), and Gendarme (8th favorite, 2022) claiming victory. With that in mind, taking a chance on a longshot can also be an appealing strategy. [Table 1]

3-year-olds and 4-year-olds have a slight advantage
Looking at performances by runners over the last 10 years in terms of age, we find that runners across a wide range of ages have finished in the Top 3, suggesting that age alone is not a reliable metric for narrowing down selections. However, in terms of success ratios, 4-year-olds have the best figures, followed by 3-year-olds. When in doubt, picking the younger runner is likely to improve your hit rate. [Table 2]

Watch runners coming from G1 races
This race pits runners returning from a summer break against those coming through the Summer Series. However, a look at the last 10 years by previous race shows that runners returning from a break after contesting a G1 in the first half of the year have performed significantly better. In particular, we should keep a close eye on runners coming directly from the Yasuda Kinen, Victoria Mile, and Takamatsunomiya Kinen, regardless of their actual finishing positions in those races. Runners with no change in jockey have the edge
Looking at performances by runners over the last 10 years in terms of jockey, we find that success ratios diverged widely between horses that were ridden by the same jockey as in the previous race and those who switched to a different jockey. Last year, jockey Kosei Miura, who held the reins of Win Carnelian for over three years, achieved his long-awaited first G1 victory. [Table 4]

The ability to secure a forward position is key to victory
The last five winners all passed the 4th corner in 3rd or higher position. While predicting race position can be difficult, a runner’s previous positions at the 4th corner can serve as a useful guide. In fact, every one of these winners had previously won an open-class or higher-level race while employing a front-running strategy. [Table 5]
